Finally, I am interested in the emotion of shame and how it shapes the expression of mental illnesses. Some of my patients, after having developed chronic forms of depression, describe an ever-pervasive sense of shame and personal failure. For others, their system of meaning succumbs to shame, precipitating a long-lasting depression. Yet others have chronic vulnerabilities to feeling shame and self-loathing, laid out and hard-wired, perhaps, from certain, chronic experiences of their primary caregivers in childhood.
