Those individuals who become disabled on account of their mental illnesses have reduced earning power and status in society, a reality that is often painfully difficult for some of these individuals to overlook. Some, particularly those who were previously high functioning, may be especially vulnerable to comparing their situations to those of their peers who are not disabled by mental illness, resulting in feelings of personal failure and shame.
